Capturing Craigmillar Castle

Please join us at 12PM, noon, Thursday 24th October to explore Craigmillar Castle, set within grassy parklands with views across Edinburgh from the top of the medieval tower house. This historic hidden gem is a labyrinth of medieval defensive walls, chambers, spiral staircases, and a great hall. The core of the castle is a late 1300s tower house, one of the first of its kind in Scotland, standing 17m tall with 3m thick walls and a maze of rooms, surrounded by a well-preserved courtyard from the 1400s and defensive walls with turrets. After 1660, the west range was rebuilt as a family residence for the Gilmour family. Mary Queen of Scots stayed at Craigmillar in 1566; owner Sir Simon Preston, her supporter and appointed Provost of Edinburgh, became her jailer in 1567.
