Please join us at Carlowrie Castle and Gardens for some stunning autumn colour in October. This elegant Victorian Castle puts on a show during autumn when the castle's ivy-adorned walls turn vibrant crimson red, creating a fairy-tale scene. The estate boasts extensive gardens, including a walled garden, Highland cows, Victorian glasshouses and several sculptures.

History: Built in 1852 for wine merchant, Thomas Hutchison, and designed by renowned architect David Rhind, Carlowrie Castle features striking Scottish baronial architecture. Note, the castle itself is a private residence, so we won’t be able to have a peak inside.
Arctic explorer and botanist, Isobel Wylie Hutchison (1889–1982), was born in Carlowrie Castle. Following the untimely deaths of her brothers and father, Isobel inherited the estate. Defying convention for her time, she ventured on solo expeditions, documenting adventures, and collecting plants for the Royal Botanic Gardens. Isobel spoke eight languages fluently and was an accomplished artist, poet, and travel writer, contributing to National Geographic and other journals.
.
NOTE: Our visit is to be confirmed closer to the date, pending availability of the castle grounds. Highly popular for autumn, it can be booked out for weddings and other special events. However, there is another similar location I have in store as a backup.

Directions
- By car, there are two alternative routes to reach the castle from Edinburgh

  • Via Kirkliston - Arriving in the village of Kirkliston near Edinburgh Airport, drive along Boathouse Bridge Rd, past the sign on the left “Entrance 400 m on left”, just before the bridge, verge left then turn left through the estate gates. Slowly head straight towards the castle, then turn left, following the signs to the large dirt parking area located back at the gatehouse.
  • Via Queensferry Road - Taking the A90 to Burnshot Road, exiting towards Kirkliston from A90. Drive along the Burnshot Road (warning: single lane farm road), following signs turn right after the bridge into the gates of Carlowrie Castle estate. Slowly head straight towards the castle, then turn left, following the signs to the large dirt parking area located back at the gatehouse.

- By bus: Use the Lothian Buses services to reach Kirkliston. Carlowrie Castle is 25-30 mins walk from Kirkliston Library heading along Boathouse Bridge Road following signs to the castle entrance. Check the Lothian Buses website for routes and schedules.
