Intro to Rock Climbing in Moab!
Details
Howdy!
I'm happy to host a Meetup in Moab on Saturday, November 16, 8:30am-2pm. I will be conducting an AMGA Single Pitch Instructor Exam and need 6 participants that are:
- physically fit
- over 19 years old
- are excited to learn about rock climbing.
- can pay the $30 admin fee within 24hrs of signing up
NO PRIOR CLIMBING EXPERIENCE REQUIRED!
Plan on meeting at Lions Park on the Colorado River in Moab to do an orientation, fill out waivers/med forms, and then to caravan to Kane Creek. Make sure you bring a mask and please contact me asap if you've been exposed to anyone with symptoms or who's tested positive for Covid 19.
I'm a professional mountain guide (IFMGA/AMGA Certified Rock Guide, Alpine, and Ski Guide), the Director of the School for International Expedition Training, and will supervise the day. Here's my website with my credentials if you're interested: http://expeditiontraining.org/instructors
Commitment: I ask that if you do sign up, that you do your very best to show up and be on time as it makes for a very difficult exam if the exam candidates don't have clients to work with. There will be a $30 fee to help ensure commitment (due within 24hrs of RSVPing), please see details below. Note that once you pay I can not change the 'not payed' status on on the roster next to your name, seems to be a glitch with Meetup and you can ignore it if you've paid.
Hope you can make it!
Cheers,
Josh
Detailed info:
Overview: You will be guided by instructors that are taking their American Mountain Guide Association (AMGA) Single Pitch Instructor Exam, which is a pass/fail assessment that takes place over 2 days. Their assignment is to create an incredible experience for you by treating you like royalty, tailoring the day to meet your goals and needs, and to create a safe learning environment for you. If your goal is to see what rock climbing, belaying, and rappelling is all about and you’ve never climbed before, they will make it happen. If your goal is to climb as many pitches as you can in X amount of hours, they will try to make that happen. If your goal is to learn about anchor building, cam placements, lead climbing, etc., they will try to make that happen.
Meeting Location: plan on meeting at 8:30am at the Lions Park in Moab (the lower parking lot near the river). We can caravan from there to the climbing site, likely the Ice Cream Parlor on Kane Cr Rd or 313 Slabs about 20-30 minutes from of Moab.
Commitment: I ask that if you do sign up, that you do your very best to show up on time. It makes for a very difficult exam if the exam candidates don't have clients to work with, someone shows up late, etc. I have run this type of Meetup many times over the years and because we've had some issues with no-shows during past exams, I'm asking each participant to pay a nominal fee in order to show their commitment. Please send the $30 via PayPal to my email address: [email protected].
You can also Venmo me at: @Josh-Beckner.
Please make this payment within 24 hours of signing up for this event. If you sign up but don't pay the fee in 24hrs I'll have to offer the spot to others on the waitlist.
Past participants have said it's worth every penny! And for comparison, it generally costs around $425 for a certified rock climbing guide in the Moab area.
Equipment:
Climbing shoes- you can rent these in Moab for about $5-7, or at the University of Utah (or many other colleges) if you don't have your own. http://www.moabgear.com/rental or http://paganclimber.com/moab/rentals/
Helmet- if you have one, please bring it, if not contact me.
Harness- again, if you have one, bring it, if not contact me
Food for lunch
Water- 2 liters
Layers- expect temps in the morning to be around 40F and up to 80F in the afternoon!
A small backpack
Please let me know asap it you need a helmet or harness and you want me to bring one for you.
Hope to see you there!
