This Thursday evening, let's explore historic Jing'an area. Starting from Starbucks Rostery near West Nanjing road metro before we stroll to just renovated Zhangyuan. Then we pall Fun min road before we arrive at Jing'an temple.

Historic Zhang's Garden reopens as a boutique destination

Zhangyuan, or Zhang's Garden, opened in 1885 as China's first modern pleasure garden, but it later decayed into a neighborhood of dilapidated houses. Its former glory has now been restored in the latest round of urban renewal.

Located just off Nanjing Road West at the corner of Taixing Road and Wujiang Road, Zhang Yuan - or Zhang's Garden - is widely known as Shanghai's largest, best-preserved and most diverse shikumen compound.

The compound was named after its founding owner Zhang Shuhe (1850-1919), a merchant from Wuxi in Jiangsu province. Zhang had bought a piece of farmland in Shanghai from a Briton named Francis Groom before building a garden home for his mother.
