Hartford Area Hiking™

Hiking at Bigelow Hollow State Park in Union. The plan is a 7 mile loop that take us around the pond. We end up in and out of CT and MA at the northern edge. This is a moderate hike due to distance. There are ups and downs and a variety of terrain. We will be hiking on the Breakneck Loop.

Please have a backpack to carry layers of clothing, water, snacks. Appropriate warm clothing needed. We will stop for snack breaks and to enjoy views. I have seen bald eagles every time I have hiked there.

Please, no sneakers or jeans. Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash and not allowed to run through the group. No kids. Please remember the posted time is what time the hike starts. Arrive early enough to be ready to start then.

West Rock Ledge State Park has many impressive vantage points along the ridge, take in up to 200 square miles of views, from New Haven Harbor to Long Island Sound to Sleeping Giant to Lakes Dawson and Watrous.
This hike will be 7 miles with a variety of terrain including rocks, roots, heights, climbing and descending. I consider this moderate due to distance and elevation. We generally hike 2 miles per hour. We will stop for snacks and definitely photos.
We are going to drive up to the summit and see the views to start, head across the ledge trail, down to Evergreen Lake, and finish by climbing back up to cars.
Not a beginner hike.

I strongly recommend waterproof hiking boots, hiking pole due to the uneven and challenging terrain, and a pack with water, food, and layered clothing. Dogs must be on leash and not running through the group. No kids.

HAH COVID update for this event
Any attendees who have tested positive, have symptoms or have been in direct contact with an infected person should not attend.

This hike is an approximately 7.0 mile loop on the Mattabassett Trail from Seven Falls to Bear Hill.

The trail is a mix of surfaces. There is no huge elevation gain, but there will be huffing and puffing and there are places where you have to use your hands.

Parking for this event is on the north side of rt. 154. There is no bathroom there. This is a moderate hike because of the terrain. The timing of the hike depends on the pace of group. There will be breaks and we will stop for photos and snacks.

You will need to bring at least 1.5L of water, snacks, and a pack to carry them. If it's sunny, bring sunscreen, a hat and additional water since there are areas that are not in the shade. Hiking boots are a must for this hike, initial part is rocky and hard on the ankles. Hiking poles are suggested to help with the downhill parts.

Dogs are welcome, but should be on a leash. Please no kids. Please remember the posted time is the beginning of the hike. Arrive early enough to be ready to start.

This hike will run Thanksgiving morning. It is a beginner all levels event. The reservoir was originally created by the Cheney Family as a water source for their mills in Manchester.

This will be a 3 mile loop around the water on well traveled trails. There is still a bit of climbing with rocks and roots. The back of the reservoir is a little swampy. Come out and get in some exercise before dinner.

I still suggest study shoes, water, and maybe a small snack. No children or dogs please. There is a large parking area down a dirt road left from the kennels. There is no bathroom.
