- Dec 18~31 2024 "O" Circuit of Torres del Paine (Patagonia) BackpackNeeds location
Declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO and the eighth wonder of the world in 2013, Torres del Paine National Park is undoubtedly a world-class tourist attraction that delights for so many reasons that it becomes difficult to put it into words. You'll find exceptional geography of majestic massifs, turquoise lakes, icebergs, rivers, lenga forests and extensive pampas visited by guanacos, ñandúes and pumas. Camping spots are limited in the park and you are not allowed to dispersed camp in the park.
Out of sheer luck, I was able to book camping sites for 3 people to do this classic trek in 8 days, and I was even able to get spots at the Chileno campground where you are only 5k away from the scene in above picture: the Towers of Torres del Paine.Rules and expectations you should know:

The Skyline yurt near Idaho City in Central Idaho is conveniently situated off the groomed Skyline trail, a popular loop used by Nordic skiers and snowshoers. The yurt provides easy access to over 20 miles of groomed and 50 miles of marked ski trails. The yurt is located on a high sunny knob, which provides a 200 degree view to the east, south and west. The view from the yurt is one of the best in the Boise National Forest. From the yurt deck you can see Wolf Mountain, Steele Mountain, Sunset Peak, and Pilot Peak. The open, rolling terrain below the yurt provides beginner Telemarkers a chance to polish their skills.
Aside from skiing and snowshoeing, there's also an option to visit Pine Flat Hot Springs on Payette River, which has an amazing natural geothermal waterfall that cascades into a rock walled pool.Rules and expectations you should know:

Hood secluded cabin snowshoe adventure weekendNeeds location
In this adventure we snowshoe into a cabin on Mt. Hood. The distance and elevation depends on how far we can drive on the mountain road to it, so worst case about 1500 feet of elevation but last year we were able to drive much closer.

*** This was put on the calendar during the trip planning meeting so the description is not correct yet ***
We were in the 3 sisters area right after Thanksgiving 2023 and we realized as there was little to no snow on the ground we could have done the 3 sisters loop hike. So that is our plan for 2024.
The full loop is 48 miles and about 7,300 feet of elevation gain. So we will average about 12 miles and 1,800 feet of elevation gain per day.
Based on this weekend, lows will be in the high 20's.
We organize on Facebook/Facebook messenger, so you do not need to use Facebook, but you must be able to use Messenger. When you join a chat for an event, you will understand why.

*** Due to a recent fire this trip is probably moving to 2026. A Tahoe Rim Trail backpack will replace this***
We are planning a 2025 trip up to Banff Canada. The dates are not locked down as we have the Vancouver Island West Coast Trail trip (also with dates not yet locked down). The dates will get sorted out in the chat.
The exact plan is also not locked down but will probably involve spending a few days in a couple of locations, either day hiking or backpacking. Of course you need a passport to enter into Canada.

*** This trip is likely to replace our 2025 Banff trip, which is probably moving to 2026 due to a fire in the Banff area ***
We are planning a 2025 trip up to backpack a portion of the Lake Tahoe Rim Trail. The dates are not locked down as we have the 2025 Vancouver Island West Coast Trail trip. Once the WCT trip dates are set, the dates for this trip will get set with at least a few weeks in between. At any rate this trip will not happen until most of the snow on the TRT trail clears and that is usually the first or second week of August. The exact dates will get sorted out in the Messenger chat.
The entire trail is 174 miles and we will do about 70 of it in 5 days on the trail. As usual we will arrange the logistics to make it work.

In 2024 Pearl and I had the Grand Canyon as our biggest adventure of the year. We don't know all the big adventures we will have in 2025 but one of them will be doing the West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island.
At only 47 miles it might be easy to underestimate the difficulty but we will be timing tides, wading rivers, climbing long and steep ladders, using cable cars, following an irregular trail, and negotiating steep slopes and earth slumps. I expect 6 days on trail. The dates will not be locked down until we have permits and we won't put this trip too close to our Banff trip.
The permits and park fees will bring the cost of this adventure to about $300, and of course you need a Canadian passport.
*** The dates are TBD because we must get permits ***
